Across most of Hampton, aluminum is the straightforward answer. In one set of districts it is a question worth asking first, and we raise it early so nobody finds out at review.

Hampton limits what can stand near an intersection, and that limit extends to fences. On any corner lot, no fence, planting, structure, shrubbery or other vision obstruction may stand more than three feet above curb level within twenty feet of the intersection of any two curb lines.

The assumption worth testing is that an open fence is exempt. Ornamental aluminum is mostly air, and it is reasonable to think a picket line you can see straight through could not obstruct anybody's view. The ordinance names fences among the things limited to three feet in that triangle and does not, on its face, carve out open ones. Whether an open picket line is read differently at your address is the city's call, and we put the question to them.

That leaves two things to design around. The first is that a corner run often has to step down as it approaches the intersection, and a stepped aluminum run looks deliberate when planned that way. The second is that the measurement is taken from CURB level and from where the curb lines meet, not from your property line or your lawn. On a lot where the yard sits above the street, three feet above the curb can be closer to the ground than you would expect.

We establish the triangle from the curb before we draw the run, and the step is much better drawn than discovered.

Separately, Hampton's BB districts publish a short list of permitted fence materials. Wrought iron is named on it. Ornamental aluminum is absent. Whether that settles anything at a particular address, only the city can say, and we raise it before design rather than guessing at it. District first. Before a panel is specified, we establish which district the parcel sits in because, in one set of them, the material question is open and, everywhere else, it is not.

Measure on site, including the grade. Aluminum comes in fixed panel lengths, so where the ground falls away the decision is whether panels rack with the slope or step down it, and that is a decision made standing on the lot.

Most aluminum runs in Hampton go in level. The transitions are where it gets interesting, at a driveway apron or a bulkhead, where a few inches of fall happen over a short distance.

Aluminum handles slope one of two ways. A racking panel pivots at the rails so the pickets stay vertical while the top and bottom follow the ground. A stepped run holds each panel level and drops it against the next, which leaves a visible stair and a triangular gap underneath. On a pool barrier, that gap matters, because a barrier is judged partly on clearance at the bottom. On an ordinary yard fence it is a question of how you want it to look.
