Custom Wood Fences
Built Board by Board
in Yorktown & Across the Peninsula
Six-foot privacy, board-on-board, shadowbox, and picket fences for Yorktown, Tabb, Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, screwed, not nailed, and set two feet deep in concrete.
Custom wood is what Crusberg Fence is known for and the work we do most. Our family has more than 40 years of combined experience building wood fences, and we work across the Virginia Peninsula, from Yorktown and Tabb to Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and Williamsburg. Whether you want a six-foot privacy fence, a good-neighbor shadowbox, or a custom design you saw and loved, we build it to fit your yard and your budget.
We also build it to last. We screw our framework and gates instead of nailing them, and set every post two feet deep in concrete- the difference between a fence that still looks straight in 20 years and one that leans in five. Homeowners notice: we hold a 4.9-star average across 70 Google reviews.
Every estimate is free, and we do not quote a fence sight unseen. Call or text, and a real person comes out, measures, and gives you an honest written price. One call gets you a real person, not a call center.
Why Homeowners Call Us for a Wood Fence
Most wood-fence projects start with one of a handful of reasons. Here is what we hear most, and what we ask back.
Get a Free EstimateWhat Coastal Virginia Does to a Wood Fence
Building a wood fence that lasts on the Virginia Peninsula is not the same as building one in a dry climate. Tidewater sits in humid, coastal air, and that shapes every choice we make.
Humidity and salt air are hard on wood. Boards take on moisture and dry out with the seasons, which works nails loose over time and is why we screw our framework and gates instead. Near the water, along the York and James rivers and the creeks off the Chesapeake Bay, the water table sits high, and the soil turns sandy, so post setting has to be done right, or a fence leans the first wet season. Waterfront lots also usually cannot take a tall privacy fence; a lower, view-friendly style, or one of our ornamental aluminum fences, fits better, and many waterfront HOAs have view rules of their own.
Sun and time gray untreated wood, cedar faster than most, though cedar grays without warping. The peak of Atlantic hurricane season, August through October, plus winter nor'easters, puts real wind load on a six-foot privacy fence, which acts like a sail; posts that were not set deep enough are the ones that come down. And since 2020, wood pricing has climbed and never really settled back, so choosing the right material for your budget matters more than it used to. Four decades of family experience on this coast is how we know what holds up here and what does not.

How Wood Fence Pricing Works
We are asked for a price per foot constantly, and the honest answer is that there are too many factors to quote a wood fence without seeing it. Anyone who gives a firm number over the phone is guessing. Here is what actually drives it.
What Happens, Step by Step
From your first call to the finished fence, here is exactly how a wood-fence project with our crew goes:

Materials and How We Source Them
We do not push any one brand or lumberyard. Whatever style and species fit your project, we can get from suppliers we trust to deliver sound material. What matters more than a brand name is how the wood is chosen and put together.
