Chain link is often the fence people ask to add something to. Chesapeake's residential districts are specific about what may go on top of one, and the exception written into that rule is narrower than it first appears.

In Chesapeake, the ground does more damage to a chain link fence than the wind. The fabric is light and flexible and rarely blows flat the way a solid panel can. What happens instead is movement: on saturated ground a terminal post can lean by a degree or two, and the line goes slack behind it.

That is why corners and terminals get the attention on a wet-ground job. They go deeper, and they get more concrete than a line post, and the fabric is not stretched until the concrete has properly cured. A run tensioned against green concrete will pull its own corners out of plumb and look fine for about a season.

Coating is the other decision the ground drives. Galvanized is the workhorse; black vinyl-coated adds a barrier over the zinc and disappears visually against planting and water, which on a canal-side lot matters beyond the corrosion argument.
